Sulcis/Iglesiente/Guspinese/ Arburese
Take a fascinating journey through the oldest land of Italy, which combines sea, mountains, and mines. The route will take you through Sardinia’s Historical and Environmental Geominerary Park, along ancient mining routes, rich with evidence of Sardinia’s mining history. The route covers 500 kilometers and is divided into 30 stages, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the region’s thousand-year history. Along the way, you will see coastal landscapes, mountain ranges, and evidence of mining activities. Explore southwestern Sardinia on an unforgettable journey, from the crystal-clear waters of Sant’Antioco to the dense forests of Marganai, from the dunes of Piscinas to the beautiful caves of Is Zuddas. This unique itinerary will take you through disused mines, tunnels overlooking the sea, abandoned villages, and ancient railways lost in the woods. This circular route begins in Iglesias and follows the tracks of miners through 8,000 years of history, from the Neolithic to the 20th century. The route passes through the Sulcis, Iglesiente, Guspinese, and Arburese regions, and you’ll travel on dirt roads, mule tracks, and disused railways. Along the way, you will visit Parco Geominerario della Sardegna and its various areas, such as Monteponi, Montevecchio, and Serbariu, to name a few. Some stops will take you to restored hamlets, such as Rosas Village in Narcao or Ingurtosu in Arbus, where travellers can rest and reflect. In these locations, you can immerse yourself in the harsh daily life of miners by safely exploring tunnels dug into the mountains where carts once frantically transported ore. Step by step, you will immerse yourself in extraordinary nature, from the mountains to the holm-oak forests of Marganai, spectacular caves such as San Giovanni in Domusnovas, and impetuous waterfalls such as Piscina Irgas, and the cobalt-blue coastline with extraordinary cliffs.
In order for you to experience this extraordinary adventure, we are ready to organise your personalised Saint Barbara Walk, adapting it to the traveller’s needs and time available.
